Spaghetti Sauce From Scratch

Our family loves spaghetti, but I don’t like the ingredients in the processed spaghetti sauce, even the organic stuff, so I always make this from scratch. If you love to garden like I do (at least most of the time) then you will save a lot of money by using your own tomatoes from your garden to make your sauce. Back in 2019 I kept track of how much I was saving our family, and the tomato sauce and salsa alone saved $1343 that summer. I won’t let anyone tell me that gardening doesn’t pay. While it might seem overwhelming and time consuming to think of adding your own spices, it really doesn’t take that long, and if you get the right spices, and good quality pastured meat, the flavor will be incredible. We like to make homemade noodles, but there are plenty of good quality noodles out there. 🙂

I like to keep my spices and dried herbs in 1/2 pints, pints, or quart sized jars so I can quickly dip my measuring spoon into the jar and get the right amount. If you have been following our Get Your . . . Right, then you might remember that week 9 was all about the Italian spices. I meant to get this recipe out for our seasoning sooner, but unfortunately I didn’t. I do ask your forgiveness in my procrastination. You can refer back to that post here. I shared this recipe for spaghetti sauce several months ago, but my daughter was able to get a better picture, so I thought it would be fun to do it again. Have you tried this recipe yet? We love hearing from you!

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp parsley
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp. basil
  • 1 tbsp. oregano
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp thyme optional

Instructions

  • Add the seasonings to two pounds of cooked, ground, pastured lamb, beef, or pork.
  • Add 2 quarts of organic tomato juice and 2 to 3 cans (6 ounces each) of organic tomato paste. The tomato paste will thicken the sauce, or you can add extra tomato juice and cook your sauce longer to thicken it was well.
