Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe

Our family loves tacos! This is an easy meal when I forget to take something out. The masa is already soaked in lime which makes it highly digestible and adds nutrients to the end product so it’s ready to prepare. If I forget to take out meat (other than chicken), I simply add it to a pot with some water in the bottom and cook it on low. While the meat is cooking, I start making tortillas, and get the lettuce and guacamole ready while I’m flipping tortillas. I store all of my spices in pints and 1/2 pint glass jars so I can quickly and easily measure up these spices. I order all of my organic spices through Azure Standard here. We LOVE the flavor of all their spices! After the meat is cooked, we simply throw all the spices in and give it a good stir.

  • Taco seasoning
  • 1 Tbs. paprika
  • 1 Tbs. chili powder
  • 1 Tbs. cumin
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. dried onion
  • 1 tsp. garlic
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika (optional)
  • 2 pounds hamburger, ground lamb, or ground pork

Week 16 How We Got Our Seasonings Better with Garlic and Onion

Do you have a favorite spice, herb, or salt you like to cook with? I think I would consider onions and garlic my two favorite seasonings after real salt. When Cory and I were first married, I used highly processed salt, pepper, bay leaves, and cinnamon. That was it. Now my large spice cupboard is overflowing. It has been so fun to learn more about adding these natural flavors to regenerative, pasture raised meats, nutrient dense vegetables and fruits, sprouted nuts, and ancient grains.  I still have a lot to learn, but I look forward to sharing the little bit that I have learned with you.

Natural Recipes

After we eliminated processed foods in 2008, I was determined to find natural recipes that were similar to the foods we had grown to love. Those processed foods didn’t make us feel energetic, focused, satisfied, or healthy like natural food. We have shared many of these recipes with family and friends and would like to bless even more through our website. You will not find MSG, chicken bullion cubes, toxic cream soup, unnatural preservatives, colorings or flavorings, white sugar, or all purpose flour in our recipes. Real food tastes great with the right combinations. It’s so important to start with excellent quality ingredients to enjoy the health benefits as well as the divine flavors of real food.

Frugal Tip: How to Afford and Store Good Quality Salt

Since we make almost all of our food from scratch, we go through a lot of salt! To save money I started buying our salt by the 25-pound bag. This bag lasts about 4 to 6 months in our large family. Salt will not go bad, but over time it can collect moisture (especially if it’s not stored properly) and may get clumps in it. This is why a lot of companies add unnatural anti-caking agents to their salt. One of the reasons we use Redmond’s, Celtic, or Himalayan salt is because they don’t add anticaking agents.

Need Some Travelling Ideas?

A few weeks ago, our family took a trip to the Hastings Museum. The most important goal of the day was actually to pick up some seeds from Green Cover Seeds, but since I like to multitask and get the most out of one trip (just ask my husband) ? we stopped at the Museum on our way. I had planned to do more, but maybe I’m learning that you can’t do everything in one day! Ha!

I get asked by a lot of people how we travel and still eat. Is there somewhere we like to eat out or do we bring our own? To be honest the last time we ate somewhere was over a year ago. I figure we eat out about once or twice a year. I am always disappointed in the quality of the food and have discovered that everyone feels better if I just bring all of our food and water. Here are some helpful ideas if you would like to start bringing your own food places.

Thanks Kailey Mentink for taking this amazing picture at the Museum!
